The desk consists of a 1.5" thick, continuous slab of hardwood as the surface. The desk's bending moment is transferred to the 1.5" thick, continuous slab of wood permanently fixed to the back edge of the desk with lag screws. The vertical orientation of this backing piece utilizes its strong axis of bending.
Two reinforcing arms extend from the back slab to the front edge of the desk, helping to distribute loads and providing a strong connecting point for the desk legs. These arms are bolted permanently with lag screws to the backing slab from behind and from above to the surface slab. Using spade bits, the lag screws were inset below the surface of the slab. Epoxy was used for a smooth rustic finish to these holes.
The desk is supported by two legs. These legs are cantilevered to allow space for a person's legs to swing freely below the desk. The two legs are connected with three carriage bolts each, allowing for quick assembly and disassembly. Two bolts connect it securely to the arms extending from the backing slab. One bolt connects it directly to the backing slab, counteracting any lateral force perpendicular to the legs.
